The orchestra, a metaphor for the group work
Let us imagine an orchestra composed of people who are not musicians : there is no harmony, no rhythm, no rules … This is the Open Orchestra. After the first moment of surprise, people decide in common about what is musically strong, interesting. Swiftly the participants learn to listen to each other, to create common norms among themselves, to intervene clearly, to respond to the others’ musical propositions, to adapt, to accord without speaking and to cooperate in order to attain a common objective: the collective production of a coherent musical object!
For the participants, the fact of finding oneself in a parallel world, unknown to all others, allows for a new dealing of the cards, facilitates rediscovering the others in another view, or even to get to know each other in a different, unusual way, to quickly find out what is going on, to identify and experiment with different behaviors for oneself and to take in their effects. There is no competition, no judgment, the device permits a great liberty and an unconstrained creativity.
It also allows for everyone to have a moment of deep pleasure in common, where emotion has its part. It is an experience one does not forget. Something happens in the group, and this « something » will stay on, lively even after the workshop.
All along the workshop, the animator draws the attention of the participants to the processes of building in common, calls on them to observe what is going on, the ways to act and their results, and he also proposes to try other methods.
Afterwards, the participants will have enhanced their capacity to rapidly produce effective results when working in group.
After the workshop, in order to reach a fuller transposition of these acquisitions to the professional sphere, we collaborate with specialized partners who are in charge of this part of the animation.
The Open Orchestra workshops are being studied, conceived and realized by a duo composed of Françoise Binder, group animator, and Michael Wolteche, professional musician, violinist and orchestra director. Each workshop is unique and adapted to the pursued objectives. Once it is elaborated, it is animated in action by Michael.
